Our miniature Australian Shepherd has the valued employee thing down pat - he knows that in the environment of our home (his work environment - Aussies take their work quite seriously) that he is a valued employee and that he can call the shots (within reasonable expectations and within the purview of the culture of the "workplace"). That's what you want to achieve with your own (human) employees - the relationship needs to be good enough and secure enough that your employees can manage their own expectations - and, of course, within the purview and established culture of the workplace. Employers spend too much of their time trying to manage the expectations of their employees - both in trying to convince employees to do perform appropriately and in hearing about the needs and wants that they are to provide. When employees actually become employees they will become proficient and expert at managing the expectations by and for themselves - creating their own destiny, as it were.
